Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I need a lot of equipment?
A. No. The tutors have a list of recommended materials for you to bring including the colours and brushes they prefer. Bockingford watercolour paper is a good standby. Otherwise just bring your regular painting and sketching equipment.

Q. Will there be other beginners?
A. If the course is a ‘beginners’ course then you can guarantee the students see themselves in that light. Other courses have mixed abilities. Everyone is keen to improve and that’s why he or she comes on a course. We generally find that students encourage each other and the tutors are adept at helping people at whatever stage they are at.

Q. Who are the master classes aimed at?
A. They are for those who we call ‘improvers’. They have usually done some courses and feel confident enough to move onto the next stage.

Q. Will I have personal help with my work?
A. Yes, we make a point of giving each of our students as much individual help as possible. The numbers are kept between 10 and 12 for that purpose.

Q. Is there a chance to see the tutor’s work?
A. Yes, all our tutors bring examples of their work for you to look at and they all do demonstrations so that you can see how they set about painting. Some of their work can be viewed on this website.

Q. Will there be a lot of travelling?
A. No. All of our studio bases are within a short distance of the locations we paint. There is minimal travelling involved. This is one of the unique features of Adventures in Watercolour, which have made our courses so popular.

Q. What if it rains?
A. As our studio bases are near to the painting locations we can easily decamp and work from sketches back at the studio. Our tutors are always prepared for this.

Q. Will we be outside all day?
A. We usually begin indoors with a demonstration then we paint outside with the tutor and return to the studio for assessment and further help. If the weather is hot then bottled water is provided. Sometimes we have a picnic at the location or we return to base. Some courses i.e. the ‘Complete Beginners’ are entirely indoors.

Q. Will my dietary needs be catered for?
A. We attempt to meet people’s needs whenever possible and you have the opportunity to let us know if you are vegetarian on the booking form.

Q. I am a complete beginner. What do I need to bring?
A. Nothing in the way of equipment. If you register for a ‘Complete Beginners’ course then you will be given everything that you need for the course. The equipment will be yours to take home afterwards so that you can continue to paint either at home or on some of the other courses offered by Adventures in Watercolour.
