Courses: Bruges Adventure - (residential
course painting on location)
Course includes Eurostar transfers and half board accommodation
Bruges
is an ideal city for the artist. There is a wealth of art and architecture,
romantic canals and quiet corners where you can sketch undisturbed.
We shall be staying in the English Convent which is a splendid
Baroque building sporting Bruge’s only cupola. The religious
community moved here from England after the Reformation and were
founded by the adopted daughter of Sir Thomas Moore. The sisters
offer a warm and caring welcome in spacious settings. Although
the rooms are simple the public areas are gracious with fine marble
and carved oak panelling. There is a large enclosed garden and
plenty of studio space. Nearby are there three of Belgium’s
finest windmills which make good subjects for painting. Although
the convent is set in a quiet corner within the historic heart
of this medieval city the main sights are all a mere fifteen to
twenty minute walk.
This is much more than a painting holiday with opportunities to
be introduced to some of Europe’s finest works of art including
the only free standing Michelangelo sculpture north of the Alps.
We shall be looking at this and fine examples of Van Eyke and other
Flemish primitives who lived here in the fifteenth century. Bruges
is a place that makes you want to return. I have visited the city
at least eight times and still find it fascinating.
